ST. PAUL vs. BUTTE FALLS (girls): St. Paul's remains undefeated

St. Paul, the only undefeated team in the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A state girls basketball tournament, staved off a challenge from Butte Falls Wednesday.

The Lady Buckaroos, 24-0, jumped out to a double-digit first-half lead, then held on down the stretch to edge Butte Falls 45-42 in the opening round game at Baker High School.

St. Paul meets Condon in the championship semifinals Friday at 1:30 p.m. Butte Falls played Cove in the consolation semifinals this morning.

Against Butte Falls, Lauren Wylie and Vanessa Wilson combined for 10 first-quarter points as St. Paul forged a 16-12 lead after one period. Krystle Rowley had seven points in the period for Butte Falls.

Kylee Schneider led St. Paul with seven points in the second quarter, and the Lady Bucks limited Butte Falls to just five points on the way to building a 28-17 halftime advantage.

Neither team lit up the scoreboard very often in the third quarter. The teams combined for just 10 points with St. Paul maintaining its lead at 33-22.

Butte Falls then slowly began chipping away at the deficit, pulling within four points midway through the final quarter.

St. Paul kept its lead, but again the Lady Loggers pulled within four points. This time Butte Falls got close on a three-pointer by Rowley with 15 seconds left in the game.

Butte Falls fouled Wilson, who made just one of the two free throws to give St. Paul a 45-40 edge. Again, Butte Falls cut into the lead on a rebound basket by Rowley. But it was too little, too late. Rowleys final basket came with just one second left in the game.

Schneider led St. Paul with 15 points. Wylie added 12. Rowley topped Butte Falls with 14.
