SOUTH WASCO vs. ELKTON: Elkton comeback comes up short

March 02, 2001 12:00 am

South Wasco County took full advantage of Elktons frigid first-half shooting, then held off the Elks second-half comeback bid Thursday to take a 56-52 win at the OSAA-U.S. Bank girls Class 1A state tournament.

Elkton made just 5 of 28 shots from the field in the first two quarters, including only 1 of 7 from three-point range.

South Wasco, meanwhile, made 11 of 28.

Only its performance from the foul line, where Elkton made 8 of 10 in the first half, kept the Elks within 28-19 at the break.

But the Redsides couldnt put Elkton away in the second half.

The Elks, buoyed by their own vastly improved shooting from the field and by the Redsides missed free throws, chiseled away at South Wascos lead.

Elkton made 10 of 24 shots in the second half and converted 11 of 16 free throws.

But it wasnt quite enough.

Chelsey Hauser led South Wasco with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Elktons Kristen Zosel led all scorers with 20 points.
