Snow can't stop Baker golfers

Baker High Schools golf teams finally got to play their first matches of the season Monday, but it was getting to the match site that was more of an adventure.

The Bulldogs traveled to the Wildhorse golf course near Pendleton for the Wildhorse Invitational. To do so meant traveling over Cabbage Hill, not always a fun task during the winter and early spring months.

Monday, the Baker vans, as well as those from La Grande, had to sit for about an hour in snowy, slushy conditions near Meacham.

We left on time, then got stuck in a traffic jam for an hour at Meacham, said Baker coach Mike Sullivan.

Im still not sure whether there was an accident that caused the problem, or what. We didnt see anything once we got going again.

Sullivan said once traffic started moving again, speeds were limited to between 20 and 30 miles per hour, and no passing was allowed all the way to the bottom of the hill.

When we got to the course, the kids had to run to their tee spots. It was a shotgun start, and we started on the run, Sullivan said.

The Baker coach said the 18-hole match was played under a variety of weather conditions, typical for this time of year in the Columbia Basin.

We had a little rain, a little hail, sun, snow, a little of everything, he said.

In the match, the Baker boys finished fifth in a 12-team field, and the Baker girls eighth in a 10-team field.

Bakers top boys finishers were Derek Riggs and Chad Smith, both shooting 80. That was nine strokes behind medalist Travis Grabeal of Pendleton with a 71.

Cassie Scrivner topped the Baker girls with a 96, nine shots behind co-medalists Mary Erbhart of Southridge (Wash.) and Tiffany Bussnik of Walla Walla.

I thought the kids played well, Sullivan said.

Most of the other teams were from the Tri-Cities area and the valley. A lot of those schools have been playing for about a month already.

The Baker teams travel to Vale Thursday.
