Baker got to see a mini preview of its Greater Oregon League competition Thursday at the Vale Invitational track and field meet.

Seven of the eight GOL teams Riverside was the only league team not participating competed at the Vale meet.

Baker coach Erik Johnson said it was a good meet for the Bulldogs to see where some of the top challenges will come from at the district meet in May.

It was a great day, nice and warm, Johnson said.

We finally got a chance to see some of the other teams in our league who we hadnt seen earlier.

La Grande won the girls meet, with Baker taking second. Ontario won the boys meet, with Baker fourth.

Johnson cautioned that for those people closely following the team scores, the meet wasnt a true indication of what Baker will offer come district time.

We moved a lot of kids around into events they dont usually run. And, we had some kids gone who usually place for us. So, it wasnt a true indication of what we could do with everybody there, Johnson said.

The Baker girls earned four individual firsts at Vale.

Danielle Jordan won the 1,500 in a time of 5:01.4. Michelle Evans topped the 800 field with a 2:34.8 clocking. Tiffany Taylor claimed the shot title with a toss of 34 feet, 2 inches. The Bulldogs 4x400 relay team of Evans, Jill Nielson, Rosanne Curtis and Shannon Barker won with a time of 4:18.2.

On the boys side, Baker didnt have any first-place competitors.

The top Baker placers were Casey Bond, third in the long jump (19 feet, 4 inches), fourth in the triple jump (39-9), and fourth in the 800 (2:10); Dillon Moore, third in the 1,500 (4:29); and Nick Strommer, third in the pole vault (12-0), equalling his personal best.

Nick started at 10-6, passed at 11, then had the wind blowing strong in his face as he prepared for his first attempt at 12 feet, Johnson said.

The Baker coach said Strommer adjusted his pace, and his standards, and made his attempt.

He went through the vault beautifully, Johnson said.

He said Strommer went out at 12 feet, 6 inches.

He just hasnt had any experience dealing with that height yet, Johnson said.

Baker travels to Grant Union Tuesday. Johnson said he will take some varsity performers and some junior varsity members to the meet.

We want to save some of the kids for our meet at Ontario on Saturday, he said.
