Baker girls earn moral victory in loss at Pendleton

It’s not often a coach is pleased after losing a game. But that’s exactly what Baker girls basketball coach Tim Smith was Tuesday evening in Pendleton.

Yes, his Bulldogs had just lost to Pendleton 50-47. It was the second time Baker had lost to the Lady Bucks this season. But, Smith said, the Bulldogs played a much better game this time around.

“We played a similar game to what we did a week ago in the first half,” Smith said. “We were kind of helter skelter.

“Then, we were a totally different team in the second half. We dominated at the defensive end of the floor.”

“It was a moral victory for us,” Smith said. “The girls wanted to make a statement, and they did so in the second half. I was very pleased. It was a gutty effort. The girls played with a lot of passion.”

Baker fell behind 18-7 after one period, and trailed 28-17 at halftime. The Bulldogs then outscored Pendleton 30-22 in the second half.

Smith said Baker had the ball late with a chance for a game-tying three-pointer but couldn’t get a shot off.

Tara Talbott led the Bulldogs with 12 points and nine rebounds. Whitney Phillips added 11 points and seven boards.

Pendleton won the junior varsity game 35-28, and the frosh/soph game 42-14.

Baker (1-2) travels to Burns Saturday.
