Baker clinched a Greater Oregon League boys basketball state berth, and swept a pair of games Friday and Saturday at BHS.

The Bulldogs improved their GOL record to 5-1 Friday with a 68-40 victory over Mac-Hi. The win keeps the Bulldogs tied for first place in the GOL with La Grande with three games remaining.

Saturday, Baker handed a visiting Emmett, Idaho, club a 70-53 defeat.

Balanced attack sinks Mac-Hi

Four Bulldogs scored in double figures against Mac-Hi, led by Jesse Brown and Dekker Smith with 16 points each.

Walker Kaseberg added 15 points, and Kennan Richards 13.

“We did a great job on the boards and it was nice to have four guys in double figures,” said Baker coach Craig Woods. “We’ve been talking about getting more aggressive and the kids did that tonight.”

Baker outrebounded the Pioneers 40-26. Smith led the way with eight rebounds. Kaseberg and Richards each added six.

Baker shot 52 percent from the field, 30-of-58. Mac-Hi shot 33 percent, 17-of-52.

Two baskets by Richards, a three-pointer by Kaseberg, and two points each from Brown, Derek Blankenship and Smith gave Baker a 13-3 cushion with 3:52 left in the first quarter.

Baker led 20-7 at the break.

Kaseberg then scored nine points, Richards six and Smith four in the second period to lead Baker to a 41-21 halftime lead.

Brown, Blankenship and Kaseberg combined for 13 points in the third period as the Bulldogs boosted their lead to 54-32.

Richards added five points, Smith four and Brown three in the fourth quarter.

Baker is now idle in the GOL until Feb. 17 when the Bulldogs travel to Ontario.
