‘Fabulous five’ Bulldogs headed to state tourney

A quintet of Baker wrestlers will make the trek to Memorial Coliseum Thursday through Saturday for the Class 4A state wrestling tournament.

Andrew Porter (130 pounds), Andrew Gettle (145), Anthony Constantine (152), Ted Shaw (189) and Jake Shukle (215) will compete at state.

“Our Fabulous Five is headed to state,” said Baker coach Dee Gorrell.

“We were in the ball park as to what we figured we’d do at district. Overall, we wrestled really good,” he said.

Shaw advances to state as the lone Baker district champion.

Shukle advances as the district runnerup. The other three finished third at the district meet.

Other Baker placers at district were Parker Warner (125) fourth, Matt Seal (130) fourth, Will Mercado (135) fifth, Brandon Zunino (140) fifth, Lane Zacharias (140) sixth, Sam Galvin (145) sixth, Lane Gray (160) fourth, and Paul Johnson (215) fourth.

Johnson lost the match for third place in quadruple overtime, Gorrell said.

Baker finished fourth in the team standings at district with 159 points. Mac-Hi edged La Grande 325.5-322.5 for the district title. Ontario was third at 311.

Spectator admission at state is $8 adults and $5 students for early sessions, and $9 adults and $6 students for semifinals and finals. Three-day passes are $45 adults and $30 students, or two-day passes for $30 adults and $20 students.
