Baker kept hold of its share of first place in the Greater Oregon League girls basketball race Friday with a 61-44 victory over Mac-Hi at BHS.

The win improves Baker’s GOL record to 4-2, the same as Ontario, with three league games remaining.

“This was a nice win. I thought we did a lot of things right,” said Baker coach Tim Smith.

“I was really pleased with the first three quarters. That was probably as consistent as we’ve played this season.”

Baker built a 25-15 halftime lead, then outscored the Pioneers 27-6 in the third quarter.

Mackenzie Srack got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs with a pair of three-point baskets in the first quarter. Baker led 12-7 at the break.

Two three-pointers from Haley Adams, and another from Ashley Trees, helped the Bulldogs increase their lead to 25-15 at halftime.

Srack and Mackenzie Warner each scored five points, and Whitney Phillips four as the Bulldogs increased their lead to 39-17 midway through the third quarter.

Then, after Mac-Hi scored to break the 9-0 string, Baker answered with another “three” by Trees, and baskets by Phillips, Tiffany Burk and Alyssa Ward to build the cushion to 48-19. Baker led 52-21 entering the fourth quarter.

“Our defense was very good tonight,” Smith said. “We made (Sierra) Burchell earn her baskets. We’ve always said one player’s not going to beat us.”

Burchell finished with 32 of Mac-Hi’s 44 points.

Smith also was pleased with Baker’s offense.

“That was our best offensive production of the season,” he said. “We shot the ball well from beyond the three-point line. We executed well. It was a group effort.”

Srack led Baker with 14 points.

Baker travels to Nyssa for a non-league game Tuesday.
