Baker successfully defended its Greater Oregon League boys basketball championship Friday, defeating La Grande 64-40 in the Baker gym to clinch the crown.

“I challenged the kids to get me a couple of firsts before the game,” said Baker coach Craig Woods.

“The first was to sweep La Grande in all three games, and the second was to by first in the GOL. The kids accomplished both.”

Woods said the Bulldogs set a defensive goal of 40 points and also reached that goal.

“I originally challenged to the kids to hold La Grande to 35 points, but we weren’t sure how realistic that was,” Woods said. “So we set the goal at 40 and these kids continue to improve.”

La Grande made a brief run at the Bulldogs in the third period, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to pull within 40-24. But Woods would have none of that.

“”When La Grande hit those three-pointers I said we’re not going to let them go on a run on us and the kids responded,” he said.

Baker used five points from Dillon Blankenship, and a rebound basket from Jesse Brown to bolt to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs led 10-4 at the break.

Baker then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to build the margin to 20-4 with 4:34 left in the first half. Jordan Curtis led the way with three points. Blankenship, Brown, and Ty Everson each added a basket, and Coleman Lay a free throw.

Baker led 27-12 at halftime.

Baker then scored the first eight points of the second half to increase its lead to 35-12. Will Barr got things started with a three-pointer. Brown and Taylor McEnroe each added a basket, and Blankenship a free throw.

Baker then outscored the Tigers 17-9 in the fourth period.

Brown and Curtis each scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs. Blankenship added 11 points.

The Bulldogs (7-0 in the GOL) travel to Ontario Tuesday and Mac-Hi Friday.
