Top-ranked McKenzie stumbled from the gate Wedneday, but righted itself in the second and third quarters to defeat Elkton 53-40 in the quarter-final round of the Class 1A state boys basketball tournament at Baker High School.

McKenzie (27-0), the only undefeated boys basketball team at any level in Oregon,  trailed 9-8 after one period, but rebounded to take a 23-17 halftime lead.

Noah Miller scored six points to lead Elkton in the opening quarter.

Jordan Wiley and Will Totten each tallied 10 points in the first half for McKenzie. Totten scored all 10 of his points in the second quarter.

Then, leading 25-18 in the third quarter, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to break the game open. Wiley scored five of those points, and Totten and Evan Dirckx two each.

McKenzie led 38-21 after three quarters.

Elkton battled back to pull within 50-40 with 34.2 seconds left. But that was as close as the Elks could get.

Wiley led McKenzie with 20 points and nine rebounds. Totten added 16 points, and Nick Nastasiuk eight rebounds.

Miller led Elkton with 15 points. Tyler Trout added 12 points.

McKenzie will meet Mountain West League foe Siletz Valley in the semifinals Friday at 3:15 p.m. The teams have met three times this season with McKenzie winning all three. However, the last meeting was only a 51-50 win.

Elkton played Damascus Christian in consolation action Thursday morning.
