Carl G. Wendt,  84, a longtime Haines-area rancher, died July 21, 2011, at his home near Haines.

His graveside service was today at the Haines Cemetery. Sally Wiens of the Haines United Methodist Church officiated, military honors were by the Oregon Army National Guard Honor Guard.

Carl was born on May 9, 1927, at College Place, Wash., to Otto William and Anna Cassie Haffner Wendt. He grew up on Beaver Creek near Baker City and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Carl ranched with his dad and brothers in Durkee and for a time then in Hereford. He married Barbara Macomber in 1955. They lived at Hereford until moving to the Haines area in 1963 where he has lived and continued ranching.

Carl was active in the Sheriff’s Posse and the Durkee Grange in earlier years and was one of many who re-established the Haines Stampede Rodeo.

He was dedicated to his family, ranching and enjoyed horses.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wendt of Haines; children, Carla Aichele, Holly and Ron Coleman, Beth Wendt, Clint Wendt, Penny Wendt, Melissa and Max Garner and Joel Wendt, all of Haines and Donald and Charlene Wendt of Ontario; grandchildren, Samantha and Mark Davis of Sela, Wash., Haley and Jay McMurtrey of Virginia Beach, Va., Mandy and Brandon Clark of Keating, Rylie Wendt and Kris Wendt of Ontario, Trista and Stephen Willetts of Baker City, Taylor Coleman of Waterloo, Iowa, and Casey Wendt, Zane Garner, LaKisha Garner and Shae Wendt, all of Haines; great-grandchildren, Kale and Mackenzie Willetts of Baker City, Colton Clark of Keating, Taylin Davis, Sela, Wash.;  sisters, Roberta Marlow of Astoria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and one nephew.
