Baker opened the Greater Oregon League girls basketball season on a sour note Friday, losing 36-28 to Ontario in the Baker gym.

Baker coach Tim Smith was not happy following the game.

“When you don’t execute, it’s tough to compete,” Smith said.

“Ontario wanted it much more than we did.

“We got outplayed. We tried to make some adjustments at halftime, but we didn’t get ’em done,” Smith said.

“We need to have somebody step up and take charge. Right now nobody’s doing that. We have people who can do it, but they aren’t right now for whatever reason.”

Baker played evenly with Ontario in the first half, trailing just 8-6 after one quarter, and 16-15 at halftime.

Then, with the score tied at 19-19 midway through the third quarter, Ontario went on a 9-5 spurt and never trailed again.

The Tigers outscored Baker 20-13 in the second half.

Baker (0-1 in the GOL and 2-8 overall) travels to La Grande Friday and Vale Saturday.
