Baker boys top Ontario

Some halftime defensive adjustments helped Baker pull away from Ontario in the Greater Oregon League boys basketball opener for both teams Friday.

Baker rallied in the second half to take a 61-44 victor on the Baker floor.

“At halftime I wrote ‘overlooking’ on the board in the locker room,” said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

“It wasn’t that we were necessarily overlooking Ontario, but we were flat.

“I told the kids we needed to do a much better job with our defensive intensity. And, our offensive execution was much better in the second half,” Richardson said.

“I was pleased with the way we responded. The kids answered the call after halftime.”

In the first period, Ontario used a pair of three-point baskets by Jason Haueter to build a 10-3 lead midway through the quarter.

Then, four points each from Jordan Curtis and Dillon Blankenship helped the Bulldogs pull within 18-15 at the break.

Ontario scored the first six points of the second quarter, but again Baker answered.

Colten Richards hit a pair of three-pointers and another basket and Thomas Hamilton and Curtis each added a basket as the Bulldogs ran off 12 straight points to take a 27-24 lead with 3:07 left in the first half.

Ontario answered with back-to-back three-point baskets to enter halftime with a 30-27 lead.

A Curtis basket and two free throws by Braden Phillips gave Baker a brief 32-30 lead early in the third period.

Ontario then went on to build a 38-34 cushion midway through the third quarter.

Baker then went on an 11-1 run to end the period and never trailed again. Baker led 45-39 at the break. Phillips had five points and Blankenship four in the spurt.

The Bulldogs then outscored Ontario 16-5 in the fourth quarter.

Baker limited the Tigers to just five field goals in the second half, outscoring Ontario 34-14 after halftime.

“That had to a lot with our defensive intensity,” Richardson said.

Blankenship led four Bulldogs in double figures with 18 points. Curtis and Phillips each added 14 points, and Richards 12.

The Bulldogs (1-0 in the GOL and 4-6 overall) travel to La Grande Friday and Vale Saturday.
