Powder Valley traveled to hostile territory Friday and escaped with a 56-46 victory over Wallowa, clinching the Old Oregon League girls basketball title in the process.

The Lady Badgers jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter, then held the Cougars off.

"We came out pretty good in the first quarter," said Powder coach Allen Bingham.

"Then they came back on us in the second quarter."

Alexandra Colton and Jessi Stephens each scored four points in the first period for Powder. Ali Abrego and Jayde Silbernagel each added three points.

Jessica Pedro added eight second-quarter points for the Badgers to offset eight from Wallowa's Bekah Jamerson and seven from Skylar Waters.

Powder Valley led 29-26 at halftime.

"We built our lead to about eight points," Bingham said. "Wallowa came back, but I don't think they ever got the lead.

"We played really well down the stretch; had nice balanced scoring," Bingham said.

"Then we hit our free throws in the fourth quarter for a change."

Powder Valley maanged just two field goals in the fourth quarter, but was 9-of-15 from the line.

"We hit them when we needed them at crunch time," Bingham said.

"It was a good, fun team effort."

Pedro led the Badgers with 15 points. Abrego, Stephens and Colton each added 10.

Powder Valley opens District 7 play Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's Imbler-Cove game. The tournament runs through Saturday at Baker High School.
