Joseph boys top Spartans

Joseph had too much firepower for a young Pine-Eagle team Thursday, handing the Spartans an 81-39 defeat in the quarterfinals of the District 7-1A boys basketball tournament at Baker High School.

Joseph led just 18-14 after one period then ran away from the Spartans.

B.J. Warnock scored six points to help the Eagles build a 13-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

Then, behind eight points from Joe Akers, Pine-Eagle battled back to pull within 18-14 at the break.

Akers hit the first basket of the second quarter, but Joseph then went on to outscore the Spartans 21-10 in the period to build its lead to 39-24 at halftime. 

Akers finished the first half with 14 points, but no other Spartans scored more than two points.

Pine-Eagle finished the first half with 18 turnovers.

Warnock equalled Akers' total with 14 points and three steals.

Joseph turned on the afterburners in the second half, outscoring Pine-Eagle 42-15.

Akers led Pine-Eagle with 21 points and seven rebounds. Colter Marks also grabbed seven boards for the Spartans. Pine-Eagle finished the game with 30 turnovers.

Trevor Lewis led Joseph with 20 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists.

Warnock added 16 points and four steals, Riley Steen 13 points and four assists, and Lucas Staigle 11 points.

The Eagles finished with 14 steals.

Joseph advances to play Wallowa in the semifinals at 2:15 p.m. today.
