Sherman battles back for win

Sherman overcame a 9-point deficit in the final period Thursday to defeat Elkton 84-78 in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A state boys basketball tournament at Baker High School.

Sherman trailed 62-53 after three quarters then outscored Elkton 31-16 in the final eight minutes.

Zach Smith, who finished with 37 points, scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the way.

Kyle Burnett, who added nine points in the quarter, hit the go-ahead basket with about four minutes left in the game.

Sherman led 21-19 after one quarter, but trailed 43-36 at halftime.

Scot Stroud added 24 points for Sherman, and Burnett 18.

Noah Miller topped Elkton with 22 points. 

Colton Maxwell added 19 points, and Tyler Trout 15.
