It was a given that whoever won the championship at Saturday’s Class 1A boys basketball state tournament would do so for the first time.

Both McKenzie (29-1) and Horizon Christian (28-4) were vying for their first crown at Baker High School.

Max Totaro hit four three-point baskets and scored 22 points to help the Hood River school end McKenzie’s perfect season with a 58-46 win.

McKenzie had rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to take a 45-43 lead with 4:15 left in the game. But, the Eagles would score just one more point.

Totaro scored seven points, and Sam Anthony six as Horizon Christian built a 16-11 lead after one period.

That duo combined for seven more points in the second quarter as the Hawks increased their lead to 25-17 at halftime.

A basket by Matt Totaro gave Horizon Christian that 10-point lead, 27-17, seconds into the second half.

Kendell Reese score 13 points for McKenzie in the third quarter to keep the Eagles close at 39-33 entering the fourth quarter.

Reese added five points, and Jordan Wiley three to help the Eagles battle back to tie the game at 43-43 with 5 minutes left.

Will Totten then gave the Eagles a 45-43 lead with another basket.

Then Horizon Christian kicked its offense up another gear.

Max Totaro’s three-pointer with 2:31 left gave the Hawks the lead for good at 46-45.

Matt and Max Totaro each added another basket and the Hawks hit 6-of-10 free throws before Anthony closed out the scoring with a three-point play.

Max Totaro led the Hawks with 22 points. Anthony added 16 and Matt Totaro 12. Jake Wells grabbed 10 rebounds.

Reese led McKenzie with 25 points. Wiley added 14.
