Baker pitcher Darryn McCauley started the 2012 Baker softball season off on a high note, no-hitting Grant Union 9-0 Thursday at the Baker Sports Complex.

The game was shortened to six innings by a steady rain that began with the first pitch and increased throughout the afternoon. A second game was postponed. No makeup date has been announced.

“It was a muddy mess,” said Baker coach Alan McCauley.

“For our first outing in not the best conditions, I thought the girls played well.

“We put the ball in play when we needed to. DJ pitched well.

“Our bats started out kind of slow,” McCauley said. “But we got some timely hits after some free plays.”

McCauley, for her part, did throw well. She struck out nine and walked one. The walk and a Baker error due to the wet field allowed Grant Union’s only two baserunners.

Baker scored all the runs it needed in the third inning, tallying five times on just two hits.

With one out Stephanie Shepherd was hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Shepherd then scored on a single by Taylor Ellis.

Walks to Sierra Howerton and Tasha Nelson then loaded the bases with one out.

McCauley then lined a two-run single to center. Darion Grove was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases.

A walk to Taylor McAdams plated another run. The final run scored an out later when Abi Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Bulldogs added three runs in the fourth.

Ellis walked and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Ellis score when Howerton lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

McCauley then doubled. Grove and McAdams then followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

Baker completed the scoring with a single run in the fifth. Smith opened the inning with a walk and eventually scored on another wild pitch.

McCauley led Baker’s offense with two hits and two RBIs. McAdams added a pair of RBIs.

Baker (1-0) hits the road next week, visiting Fruitland Tuesday and Weiser Thursday.
