Baker tuned up for its Friday doubleheader with Mac-Hi by defeating Vale 12-4 in a noleague softball game Tuesday at Vale.

The Bulldogs (12-5 overall) hammered 15 hits and limited Vale (13-9) to four safeties.

Baker and Mac-Hi are tied for the Greater Oregon League lead with 7-1 records. They will meet Friday at 2 p.m. in a twinbill at the Baker Sports Complex. A Baker sweep would secure the GOL title. The teams split earlier this season at Milton-Freewater.

Baker coac h Al McCauley was happy with the game at Vale.

“We had some solid pitching fro our pitchers, and Tasha Nelson in the 9 Hole, came through a couple of times with big hits,” he said.

D.J. McCauley got the start in the circle and pitched the first four innings. McCauley allowed one hit, struck out four, walked one and allowed two unearned runs. Sierra Howerton threw the final three innings allowing three hits, striking out two, walking one and giving up two runs.

Nelson finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Baker scored four runs in the top of the second inning.

Abi Smith walked, Stephanie Shepherd was hit by a pitch and Nelson laid down a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Howerton drew another walk to plate the first run. Jessi Stephens followed with a two-run double, and McCauley finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh.

In the fourth, Darion Grove drove home both runs with a bases-loaded double. Danielle Freese scored the fifth-inning run on a passed ball.

Singles by Grove and Taylor McAdams, and a walk to Smith loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Freese singled to score one run. Shepherd walked to drive in another run. Nelson then doubled in the two more runs.

McAdams added an RBI double in the seventh.
