Baker made short work of Grant Union in a nonleague softball game Tuesday at John Day.

The Bulldogs hammered 20 hits on the way to a 27-1 win in five innings.

“It got so bad we started playing station to station, and I finally had some runners leave early from their base to make outs to end innings,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

Darion Grove and Darryn McCauley each drove in six runs, Jessi Stephens four and Sierra Howerton three.

Grove had five hits, including a home run. McCauley and Stephens each had three hits, and Howerton two hits, including a homer.

Baker scored nine runs in the first inning.

Howerton led off with a solo homer. Stephens walked and was doubled home by McCauley. Grove then slugged a two-run homer.

Two outs and two runners later, Tasha Nelson slapped an RBI double. Walks to Howerton and Stephens loaded the bases before another walk to McCauley drove home another run. Grove then singled to drive her third and fourth runs of the inning.

The Bulldogs added six more runs in the second.

Walks to Abi Smith and Nelson sandwiched around a single by Stephanie Shepherd loaded the bases. Howerton then hit a sacrifice fly, and Stephens a two-run double. Later in the inning, Grove, Taylor McAdams and Danielle Freese added RBI singles.

Baker added eight more runs in the fourth.

Howerton, Stephens, McCauley and Grove had run-scoring singles. Smith and Nelson also earned RBIs with bases loaded walks, as did Shepherd with a bases loaded hit by pitch. Another run scored on an error.

Baker completed the scoring with four runs in the fifth.

McCauley had a  three-run double, and Stephens an RBI single.

McCauley pitched the first three innings allowing one hit and striking out six. Howerton threw the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out one.

The Bulldogs return to Greater Oregon League action Friday when they host La Grande in a doubleheader at the Baker Sports Complex.
