Baker boys defend tennis title

Baker successfully defended its Special District 4 boys tennis title Friday at the Ash Grove Complex.

The Bulldogs finished with 24 points, double the score of second-place Vale.

Baker’s No. 1 doubles team of Jordan Curtis and Lukas Huggins claimed the boys doubles championship with a 6-2, 7-5 win the title match.

Curtis and Huggins won their semifinal match earlier Friday 6-0, 6-0.

Baker’s No. 2 doubles team of Brandon Zunino and Nathan Eiselin placed third.

That duo lost their semifinal match 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, then rebounded to win the third-place match.

Ivan Hansen finished second in the boys singles, losing the title match 6-2, 6-0. Hansen won his semifinal 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Jesse Burk won the boys consolation title.

Kate Sizer placed third in the girls singles. Sizer lost her semifinal 6-3, 6-2 then won the third-place match 6-1, 6-0.

Emily Miller won two consolation matches Friday to claim the girls consolation title.

The Baker girls finished third in the team standings with 10 points. Crook County won the team championship with 27 points.

Curtis, Huggins, Zunino, Eiselein and Sizer now travel to the University of Oregon at Eugene Thursday through Saturday for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A championships.

Play begins Thursday at 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m.
