Legion off to 1-3 start

Gentry Ford, Baker’s American Legion baseball team, is off to a 1-3 start after games at Pendleton and Boise earlier this week.

Saturday, Gentry Ford split a doubleheader against the Pendleton Red Bull, losing the first game 7-1 but bouncing back to claim the second game 6-5.

Monday, at Boise, the Baker squad lost 18-12 to Twin Falls and 11-1 to Bishop Kelly.

Split at Pendleton

In the opener, Gentry fell behind 4-0 in the first inning and could never catch up.

“We had three or four lineouts,” said Gentry coach Dan Blankenship.

“We hit the ball hard, which was good.”

Gentry scored its lone run in the third. Jake Grammon doubled and was singled home by Kody Younger.

Dillon Blankenship led Gentry with three hits, including a pair of doubles.

Starting pitcher Mason Cline took the loss.

In Game 2, Gentry trailed 2-1 entering the fifth inning, then scored five runs. Gentry then held Pendleton off for the win.

In the fifth, Gentry scored all of its runs on no hits. Two hit batsmen, an error and two walks accounted for the runs.

“We had eight more lineouts,” Blankenship said.

Caleb Custer got the win in relief of Younger. Blankenship earned a save.

Too many free passes

Gentry pitchers issued too many walks against the Idaho teams.

Gentry led Twin Falls 7-2 after two innings, then fell apart.

“We couldn’t find the strike zone after that,” Blankenship said.

Gentry pitchers issued 14 walks in the game.

Gentry scored first in the first inning when Blankenship singled home Darren Dolby who had singled.

Gentry then added six runs in the second inning.

Younger walked and Grammon singled. Both rode home on a double by Keaton Bachman.

Dan Stinson then walked before Custer rapped an RBI single. Cline followed with a run-scoring double, and Blankenship added a sacrifice fly.

Grammon’s two-run triple highlighted a 5-run sixth for Gentry. Bachman added an RBI single. Two more runs scored on passed balls.

Bachman finished with three hits. Grammon, Blankenship and Cline each added two.

Custer was the losing pitcher.

Against Bishop Kelly, the Baker team managed just two hits.

Gentry’s lone run scored when Braden Phillips tripled and scored on a passed ball.

Younger took the loss on the mound.

Gentry Ford (1-3) was scheduled to travel to Hermiston Thursday, but Hermiston cancelled those games.

Gentry’s next action is Tuesday at the Baker Sports Complex when they host Milton-Freewater in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
