Headstones are an embarrassment

I have been saddened and embarrassed by the condition of the headstones at Mount Hope Cemetery. After meeting with Mike Kee, the city manager, and the contractor for the care of the cemetery I found that there is no fund for stone repair.

Convince us, Democrats

No sooner had Mitt Romney selected Congressman Paul Ryan to be his vice-presidential running mate than the Democratic spin machine cranked up. “Be afraid, ladies,” we’ve been told. “Beware of that Ryan character. He’s a big part of the Republican ‘War on Women!’ ”

Headstones are an embarrassment

I have been saddened and embarrassed by the condition of the headstones at Mount Hope Cemetery. After meeting with Mike Kee, the city manager, and the contractor for the care of the cemetery I found that there is no fund for stone repair.

I would like to set up a volunteer group who could donate time for the restoration of the headstones over time. Several of us  on the Board of the Baker County Historical Society will donate time and expertise to restore the stones following the guidelines of the State Cemeteries Commission.

The care of the stones was to fall on the families, many of whom have scattered over the U.S. If a task force could be formed we would go to the City Council with a plan next year to ask for funds to make Mount Hope as beautiful as many other cemeteries in the state.

So what terrible sin did Mr. Ryan commit against women? Well, he voted for the Protect Life Act, which passed the House of Representatives but was never voted on in the Senate. The purpose of this bill is to overturn the Obamacare mandate requiring religious charities to provide birth control services for their employees, even though doing so violates the beliefs of these organizations. The act also forbids the use of tax dollars to pay for abortions.

Note that women are not the target of this act. Rather, it is aimed at an arrogant Federal Government which is trampling underfoot the constitutional right of Americans to freely practice their religion.

During the next couple of months, it would be extremely valuable if we could have a debate between the two parties with their rather different methods of getting our economy growing healthily again and so putting the unemployed back to work. But the Democrats can’t risk doing this, as they would be sure to lose such a debate. Although their policies haven’t extracted us from the current economic morass, all they are offering us voters is more of the same.

So instead of a healthy debate, Democrats and their hard Left allies throw out one red herring after another —  “Mitt Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years.” (Vice President Joe Biden). “Paul Ryan voted to ban all birth control.”(Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania). Not only do these accusations distract us from the main issue facing voters, they are completely untrue.

So come on, you Democrats; convince us. Show us how annual trillion dollar deficits, juicy government tidbits for politically connected corporations, and a policy of skyrocketing energy prices are going to bring us all prosperity, even though they’ve failed to do so for the past 3½ years.
