There will be three new faces on the Baker City Council next year. And one that is relatively familiar to longtime residents.

According to unofficial results from the Baker County Clerk’s Office, Kim Mosier garnered 2,404 votes. Richard Langrell, a former council member, received 2,125 votes. Mike Downing collected 2,120; and, Barbara Johnson earned 2,079.

Top vote-getter Moiser is a former deputy district attorney for Baker County. Langrell is a business owner and served on the council during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Downing is in agricultural sales and a former pro-tem justice of the peace. Johnson is a retiree and member of the local group Concerned Citizens of Baker County.

Mosier said in her candidate’s statement that her main priority is “to be collaborative with other council members and make reasonable, thoughtful, and logical decisions. I have no agenda, but I do care greatly about the issues that improve the livability of Baker. This includes community safety, parks, and public services.”

She didn’t return phone and email messages left by the Herald today.

The three other winners were available for comment, however.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges of the office and representing the citizens of Baker City to the best of my ability,” Langrell said.

He predicts the biggest thing the councilors will deal with next year is union negotiations.

“I’m excited,” Downing said. “I will do the best I can. There are lots of things going on in this city. A lot of things that will need the council’s attention. I’m not interested in any specific issue.”

“I’m itching to dig in,” Johnson said.

She’s doing research on various issues and reviewing records of recent council meetings.

“I think we’ll be able to give good service to the citizens of Baker City,” Johnson said about the new council.

The top three vote-getters will serve four-year terms. Johnson will be up for re-election in two years because she placed fourth in votes.

Incumbent Milo Pope, with 1,651 votes, didn’t receive enough support to serve another term. He could not be reached in time for this story.

Another candidate with a familiar name didn’t make the final four either: Baker School Board Member Kyle Knight received 1,505 votes.

Terry Schumacher earned 1,500 votes; Jack Turner received 1,199 votes; and, R. Mack Augenfeld garnered 481 votes.

There were four write-in candidates and together they received 126 votes total.

Mitchell Southwick will serve a third term as Baker County Sheriff after obtaining 5,407 votes versus Dee Gorrell’s 1,817 votes.

And the new Baker County Justice of the Peace will be Don Williams. He captured 3,824 votes versus opponent Steve Bogart’s 3,244.

Baker County voter turnout was 83 percent—that’s a return of 8,527 of the 10,394 ballots mailed out.
