Baker girls lose GOL opener

Ontario scored just six fewer points in the second quarter Friday than Baker did in the entire game in the Greater Oregon League girls basketball opener for both teams.

Ontario scored 19 second-period points on the way to defeating the Bulldogs 49-25 in the Ontario gym.

Baker trailed just 8-5 after one quarter, but Ontario went on a 17-2 run to start the second quarter.

Ontario’s Jessica Lang scored nine of her 13 points in the quarter. The Tigers’ London Wettstein added six of her 14 in the period.

Ontario led 27-10 at halftime.

Two Monica Voboril free throws with 6 minutes left in the first half was all Baker scored until the final minute.

Allie Brown added a free throw, and Abi Smith a basket to end the first half.

Smith added two more field goals, and Brown another in the third period. But, that was all of Baker’s scoring as Ontario increased its lead to 40-16 at the break.

Brown and Michelle Birkmaier led Baker with seven points each.

Baker (1-7 overall, 0-1 in the GOL) hosts Pendleton in a nonleague game Tuesday. The Bulldogs then host La Grande Friday.
