Baker played a spirited first half against La Grande Friday in the Bulldogs’ Greater Oregon League girls basketball home finale.

But, the Bulldogs needed more than a “spirited” half against the Class 4A No. 3 Tigers. La Grande, the GOL regular-season champion, went on to defeat Baker 58-29.

La Grande’s Lauren Mills scored 13 of her 21 points in the first quarter to lift the Tigers to a 16-9 advantage.

Then, after La Grande increased its lead to 10 points early in the second period, back to back baskets by Baker’s Abi Smith and Michelle Birkmaier pulled the Bulldogs to within 19-13 with 3:48 left in the first half.

La Grande led 26-17 at halftime.

And, that was the high point for Baker.

La Grande scored the first 13 points of the second half to build its cushion to 39-17.

Baker finally scored again with 1:54 left in the third quarter on a basket by Brie Sand.

La Grande led 41-21 at the break.

Baker then went totally quiet from the field. The Bulldogs did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Baker scored eight points in the period, all from the free throw line.

Birkmaier led Baker with eight points.

La Grande also won the junior varsity game 39-14.

Baker travels to Ontario Tuesday and Mac-Hi Friday to complete its season.
