Powder girls place third

Powder Valley broke open a close game early in the second quarter Saturday and went on to defeat Wallowa 54-40 in the District 7-1A girls basketball third-place game at Baker High School.

Powder Valley will open the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs Wednesday, tentatively at Crane.

Against Wallowa, the Badgers led just 10-9 after one quarter. Powder then scored the first 10 points of the second period to build its lead to 20-9.

Alexandra Colton led the way with four points. Lindsey Loennig, McKinsey Hampton and Ali Abrego each aded a basket.

Powder Valley outscored Wallowa 23-11 in the second quarter to take a 33-20 halftime lead.

Abrego led Powder Valley with 23 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists.

Colton added 17 points and four steals.

Morgan Waters led Wallowa with 16 points.
