Baker opened defense of its Greater Oregon League softball championship Friday by sweeping Ontario 9-2 and 11-5 at the Baker Sports Complex.

The sweep leaves Baker 2-0 in the GOL and 4-7 overall, ending a seven-game losing streak.

“We talked about it before the games, that it was a start to a new season,” said Baker coach Al McCauley.

“We talked about that there are no nonleague playoffs, and that we needed to start fresh from here."

Abi Smith and Taylor McAdams led the Bulldogs, each with four hits in the twinbill. Smith had two home runs, a double and 7 RBIs. McAdams had a double and 5 RBIs.

“Abi hit the heck out of the ball today, and Taylor was right there, too,” McCauley said.

After spotting Ontario a pair of runs in the top of the first inning in Game 1, Baker evened the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

McAdams provided the spark with a two-run single, scoring Taylor Ellis and Smith, who had both walked.

Smith gave Baker the lead for good in the third inning, lining a two-run homer to left.

Baker added single runs in the fourth and fifth, one coming on an error, the other on Darion Grove’s single.

Baker closed out the scoring with three runs in the sixth. Sierra Howerton’s two-run triple and Kayla Davis’ fielder’s choice plated the runs.

Howerton was the winning pitcher.

Ontario built a 3-0 lead through three innings in Game 2 before Baker answered with five runs in the bottom of the third.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs on singles by Sarah Shankle, Juliana Delatorre and Ellis. Smith then unloaded them with a grand slam to left.

McAdams followed with a double, and scored on a single by Davis.

Baker added three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

In the fourth, Smith had an RBI double, and McAdams a two-run single.

In the sixth, Howerton, McAdams and Grove each had RBI singles.

Howerton again was the winning pitcher.

Baker travels to Weiser this afternoon for a nonleague game.

The Bulldogs then host co-defending GOL champion Mac-Hi in a doubleheader Saturday.
