Crews douse fire near Bourne

A major firefighting effort that included three aircraft prevented a lightning-sparked fire from spreading into heavy fuels near Bourne on Thursday afternoon.

The two-acre Mine Shaft fire was reported by the lookout on Mount Ireland. The blaze was on private land near the abandoned Golconda Mine — hence the fire’s name.

Two single-engine air tankers from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), and one ODF helicopter worked on the blaze from above, and four engines and two crews worked on the ground, according to the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

Mop up continued today, including a 10-man crew from the Powder River Correctional Facility in Baker City.
