Baker opened Greater Oregon League volleyball play Tuesday with a 14-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 win against Ontario in the Baker gym.

“Our motto is to be better every day,” said Baker coach Michele McCauley.

“We were a slow starter tonight. Then we finally figured some things out. You can really see the difference when we play aggressively."

In Game 1 Ontario pulled away from a 7-7 tie and ran away from the Bulldogs.

Game 2 started almost the same way. But this time Baker rallied.

With Baker trailing 11-8, Madi Elms went to the service line, and when she was done Baker led 13-11.

Then, with Baker leading 16-15, Makenna Bachman served seven straight points, including three aces, to give Baker a 23-15 edge.

Kayla Davis then served the game-winner.

With the score tied 20-20 in the third game, Kate Averett served Baker to a 22-20 advantage. The Bulldogs then maintained a 1- or 2-point lead the rest of the way before Michelle Freese’s hit scored the winning point.

The teams battled back and forth in Game 4 until Baker turned a 20-18 deficit into a 23-20 lead with Bachman serving.

The Bulldogs added a bit of luck while leading 23-21 when Whitney Lemmon bumped a pass at the net. The ball had enough momentum to barely clear the net and landed on the Ontario side for a 24-21 Baker lead.

Baker then won the match when Ontario was called for an illegal hit on match point.

Bachman was 26-for-26 serving with three aces, and 43-of-45 setting.

Dani McCauley was 11-for-11 serving and 48-of-49 setting.

Lemmon was 9-for-11 hitting. Michelle Lehman added four blocks.

Summer Phillips was 9-of-10 hitting with a kill. Elms was 18-of-20 serving with three aces and had 22 digs.

Freese had 10 kills and 20 digs.

Baker swept the preliminary matches. The Bulldogs won the frosh/soph match 20-25, 25-12, 15-8. Baker won the junior varsity match 25-23, 25-7.

The Baker JV competed at a tournament at Payette Saturday. Baker defeated Weiser 30-22, Melba 30-13, Parma 30-17, Cole Valley 30-27, Nyssa 30-23, Marsing 30-22 and Ontario 30-28.
