EUGENE — Baker finished 11th at the Class 4A state boys cross country meet Saturday at Lane Community College at Eugene.

The Bulldogs totaled 258 team points. La Salle Prep won the team title with 54 points.

Senior Evan Krohn was Baker’s top individual finisher, placing 21st with a time of 17:06.

Ian Krohnplaced 34th with a time of 17:26, Nate Baeth 79th with a time of 18:33, Taylor Hawes 84th with an 18:41 clocking, Cody Gyllenberg 95th with a time of 19:18, Ben Spaugh 97th with a time of 19:24, and Franklin Bowers 104th with a time of 20:09.

“The boys put in a strong effort but came up a little short of their expectations,” said Baker coach Mike Knutson.

“They just didn’t race with the same confidence and intensity they displayed at Districts. It’s very hard to pull the rabbit out of the hat two weeks in a row.”

Knutson said Ian and Evan Krohn had aspirations of a Top 10 finish and “have been running 40-50 miles per week to accomplish that goal; they have the intrinsic motivation you just can’t coach. But Saturday they were a bit too conservative at the start, got boxed in, and had to play catch-up for most of the race.

“With such a deep, talented field, it’s difficult to dig yourself out of that hole.  I’m extremely proud of their accomplishments and hard work this year,” Knutson said.

“Losing these five seniors will be hard but they’ve really set a great example for our younger boys.”
