Baker lost a pair of nonleague boys basketball games Friday and Saturday at the annual Fruitland Christmas Tournament.

The Bulldogs (2-6) lost 61-42 to New Plymouth Friday, and 50-43 to Fruitland Saturday.

Baker Coach Joel Richardson said despite the losses he was pleased with the improvement shown by the Bulldogs Saturday.

“Our goal was to get better than the way we played Friday,” Richardson said.

“We did that. I’ll take that every single night.”

Richardson said the Bulldogs just couldn’t get the ball to go in the basket against Fruitland.

Baker shot 14-of-31 from two-point range against the Grizzlies, and 3-of-18 from three-point range.

“We didn’t shoot a great percentage. We got good looks. We just couldn’t knock ‘em down,” Richardson said.

Baker trailed just 25-24 at halftime, but was outscored 8-3 in the third quarter.

Neither team scored from the field in the period. Fruitland was 8-of-12 from the free throw line, Baker 3-of-8.

Baker finished the game 6-of-15 from the line.

“You’ve got to make your free throws throughout the game, not just in the fourth quarter,” the Baker coach said.

Baker trailed by 10 points late in the game and managed to pull within three points. Richardson said they had the opportunity to get within one, but couldn’t get the ball in the basket.

Mason Cline led Baker with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Friday, against New Plymouth, Baker was short on numbers and short on ball control.

“We didn’t handle the pressure very well,” Richardson said.

He said the Bulldogs played just six players due to illness, injury and disciplinary action.

“We were short some guys tonight,” he said.

“We did some good things at times. We just have to work harder defensively.”

Cline again led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Kyle Srack added 14.

Baker travels to Sisters Thursday through Saturday for the Sisters Tournament. Baker plays Philomath Thursday.
