Baker’s young girls basketball team had no answers for Class 5A Pendleton Friday in a nonleague game at BHS.

Pendleton (5-8) scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, stopping the Bulldogs (1-9) 73-26.

Despite the loss, Baker coach Jenny Mowe-Joseph was happier Friday than she was after the Bulldogs fell to Nyssa a night earlier.

“We played much better tonight,” Mowe-Joseph said.

“We’re obviously not happy with a loss, but baby steps. We took some baby steps.”

Baker has had trouble scoring all season, but some of those “baby steps” were obvious against Pendleton.

“I thought we looked a little more relaxed with our shooting tonight,” Mowe-Joseph said.

“I’m not the kind of coach that will bench a player for shooting the ball. I want the girls to shoot the ball. But we just need to find the confidence to do so when we should.”

Trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, Baker finally broke the scoring ice with a Whitney Lemmon free throw with 5:40 left in the quarter.

Allie Brown’s basket with 29 seconds left in the period was Baker’s first field goal.

The Bulldogs trailed 23-6 at the break.

The pattern continued in the second period. Pendleton ran off a pair of 6-0 runs, and added a 7-0 run on the way to building a 45-15 halftime advantage.

Brown led Baker with eight points.

Baker lost Friday’s preliminary games 62-25 (frosh/soph) and 67-32 (JV).

Baker travels to Pendleton Thursday.
