Two people were arrested in a motel room in Baker City Thursday night and charged with stealing a pickup truck from a rental agency in Spokane, Wash.

Baker City Police believe the couple might also be involved in a fraudulent credit card scheme.

Cheryl Daveen Wipf, 47, of Huntington, Calif., and Christopher Szabo, 42, unknown address, were arrested about 10:06 p.m. and taken to the Baker County Jail.

The investigation started Thursday afternoon when employees from Flagstaff Sports and Copy Ship and Mail, both in the Basche-Sage Place, reported that the couple had tried to make purchases with credit card numbers and expiration dates, but no physical cards, Baker City Police Sgt. Josh Bryant said.

The couple also tried to buy an embossing machine, which could be used to print numbers on plastic, Bryant said.

One employee saw the couple drive away in a new Ford F-150 pickup.

A city patrol officer saw the truck in a motel parking lot, and arrested the couple in their room.

Police applied for a search warrant and planned to search the motel room this morning, Bryant said.

The investigation is continuing, he said.
