Pine-Eagle held off Wallowa 57-53 in the District 7-1A boys basketball quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Baker High School.

Trailing 33-32 with 2:44 left in the third quarter the Spartans went on a 14-2 run that gave them a 46-35 advantage early in the fourth period.

Nathan McCall led the way with six points in the run. Dalton Simrell, Wyatt Akers, Jon Thorn and Jess Swanson each added a basket.

Then, with Pine-Eagle leading 55-41 with about 3:30 left in the game Wallowa went on a 12-2 run of its own to pull within four points with 39.4 seconds left.

Wallowa was forced to foul. And, although Pine-Eagle missed the free throws, the Cougars could get no closer.

Behind six points by Spencer Shelton, Wallowa took a 10-9 lead after one quarter.

Pine-Eagle then scored the first nine points of the second quarter to build an 18-10 cushion with 3:33 left in the first half.

The Spartans led 26-17 at halftime.

Wallowa slowly chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter until back-to-back three-point baskets by Karl Wellens and Cole Hafer gave the Cougars the lead, 33-32 with 2:44 left in the quarter.
