Spartans lose third-place boys game

Joseph broke open a close game in the third quarter Saturday and went on to defeat Pine-Eagle 74-56 in the third-place game at the District 7-1A boys basketball tournament at Baker High School.

Leading just 34-33 at halftime, Joseph outscored the Spartans 26-9 in the third period to break the game open.

Cayden DeLury scored 11 of his game-high 26 points in the third quarter for the Eagles.

Sam Beckman and Aaron Borderding each added four points in the quarter as six Eagles hit the scoring column.

Pine-Eagle rode five points from freshman Wyatt Akers to a 9-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

But, Joseph’s Wil Sotyr answered with seven points later in the period to pul Joseph to within 18-15 at the break.

The teams then traded baskets throughout the second quarter which saw seven ties and 10 lead changes.

Pine-Eagle was hurt when one of its top ball-hanlders, Colter Marks, picked up his fourth foul with 1:19 left in the first half.

Jon Thorn led Pine-Eagle with 14 points.

Joseph travels to Ione Wednesday in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
