Crosshill Christian boys third

Crosshill Christian rallied midway through the fourth quarter Saturday to defeat Powder Valley 60-54 in the Class 1A state boys basketball third-place game at Baker High School.

Leading 47-45 with 4:11 left in the game, the Eagles went on an 11-1 run during the next two minutes to pull away.

Matthew Gille led the way with seven points during that stretch.

The teams battled back and fourth throughout the game that saw five ties and 10 lead changes.

Powder Valley led 13-12 after one period only to have Crosshill Christian take a 24-21 halftime advantage.

Crosshill Christian increased its lead to 31-25 midway through the third quarter before Powder Valley made another run.

Led by four points from Quin Stephens the Badgers went on a 10-2 run to take a 35-33 lead with 3:06 left in the quarter.

Crosshill Christian quickly answered with a 6-0 spurt, all by Gille, to regain the lead for good at 39-35.

The Eagles led 40-38 entering the fourth quarter.

Trailing 47-40, five straight points by Powder’s Marcus Pratt cut the deficit to 47-45. But that was as close as the Badgers would get.

Gille led Crosshill Christian with 25 points. Ryan Dejager added 12 and Ethan Talmage 11. Dalton Cubit grabbed 17 rebounds.

Pratt topped Powder Valley with 17 points. Seth Dixon added 10. Tyler Robinson grabbed 15 rebounds.
