SUMPTER — The Sumpter City Council wants marijuana stores to acquire a permit from the city before opening.

The Council, meeting in an emergency session Friday afternoon, approved the first reading of an ordinance requiring the permit and setting other limits on pot dispensaries, including hours of operation.

The city’s charter requires another reading before the ordinance takes effect.

Two recreational marijuana business — The Golden Nugget and Coughie Pot dispensaries — are in the process of becoming licensed by the OLCC and expect to be open on Mill Street in Sumpter in January.

City Councilor Greg Lucas said Friday that councilors had not expected the dispensaries to be open so soon, which prompted Friday’s emergency meeting.
