After several years of thinking about it, Leo Brookshier finally decided to write a check to Best Friends of Baker.

Though he told members of Best Friends about his donation, he didn’t reveal how many zeros that check would have.

He presented the check Tuesday to three Best Friends officers: President Cheryl Thayer, Vice President Susan Castles and Interim Treasurer Carmen Ott.

“I gave the check to (Thayer), her mouth fell open, then she screamed,” Brookshier says, his eyes twinkling.

He donated $30,000.

Old Man Winter has brought more than copious amounts of snow and record cold to Baker City this month.

Even before winter’s official start Wednesday, the captain of cold had boosted the city’s bill for snowplowing to about $56,000.

That total, as of Monday, includes labor, fuel and equipment costs. And those costs will grow as city crews work nearly around the clock to remove snow from city streets. With snow falling Friday morning from the latest storm, those crews likely will be busy into the final week of 2016.

The money spent through Monday is more than half the total the city has budgeted — $92,602 — for snow removal for the fiscal year that runs through June 30, 2017.
