Deran Dexter held up a spent rifle cartridge and a grin spread across his face Wednesday afternoon.

This is the charm bullet,” he said, holding it up for all to see.

That shell, though, is not what drew the crowd around the Baker City 12-year-old at the office of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in Baker City.

A pump house fire fanned by an unrelenting wind threatened a home on Pocahontas Road Monday afternoon.

Flames were touching the home of John Bennett when volunteers from Baker Rural Fire Protection District arrived at 43887 Pocahontas Road, said Fire Chief Dan Weitz. The department was called out at 1:35 p.m. after neighbors spotted smoke coming from Bennett’s pump house.

The pump house was fully engulfed in the blaze when firefighters arrived, Weitz said.

“We responded quickly and knocked it down quickly, Weitz said. “We got lucky on that one.”

Bennett was not at home when the fire started. It was blamed on an electrical malfunction, Weitz said.
