The State Highway Department will consolidate the Huntington maintenance division with the Ontario division this month, it was advised today.

Eastern Oregon Division Engineer Doc Parsons, La Grande, confirmed information submitted to the Democrat-Herald by a Huntington resident that stated the consolidation would become effective March 18.

Larry O’Dell was sworn in Thursday morning as Baker City’s new postmaster.

O’Dell filled the vacancy created when Ed Bailey retired as postmaster Oct. 2, 1992. Michael Kelly Brady had been interim postmaster.

Baker County children suffered less abuse and neglect in 2006 than in past years, but the number who were placed in dangerous situations increased.

That’s according to the 2007 Children First for Oregon Status of Oregon’s Children County Data Book released Tuesday.

Thirty-two Baker County children, from birth to age 17, were victims of abuse and neglect in 2006, according to the report.

Wes Morgan is in the water business in a place where the climate is much closer to desert than to rain forest.

This makes Morgan, who manages the Burnt River Irrigation District in southern Baker County, a skeptic.

Show him a March snowstorm and he’ll talk about an April heat wave that could erase the snowpack in a few dismal days.

Yet the current winter makes a formidable obstacle even for Morgan’s instinctive cynicism.

The numbers are too compelling to dismiss.

“Optimism is starting to overtake pessimism a little bit,” Morgan said.
