A crowd of between 500 and 600 people heard Bill Clinton pay Baker City its first visit by a U.S. president in almost half a century.

Delivered from the steps of the Baker County Courthouse, Clinton’s 55-minute stump speech — in support of his wife, U.S. Sen. A California company has applied for a conditional use permit to build a solar power station near Unity, the first of its kind in Baker County.

Enerparc Inc., of Oakland, wants to build the facility on about 23 acres of private land near the junction of Highways 26 and 245, about two miles north of Unity.

The solar farm would produce about 2.75 megawatts of power from 6,000 solar panels. The energy would be sold to Idaho Power Company, according to the company’s application.

That’s enough power to supply about 450 homes, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

The proposed site is owned by Kenneth and Claudia Brush.
