Dave Wallis Zachry, 87 of Heppner, a former Baker County teacher, died April 30, 2018, at his home.
He went to join the love of his life, Mary Jo Zachry, family members said.
There will be a celebration of his life in June in his adopted home of Heppner.
He was born at Provo, Arkansas, to Benjamin Harrie and Louise Ethel Zachry on Jan. 10, 1931.
Dave enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and the Heppner High School Mustang sports teams. A coach until the end, the student athletes always put a smile on his face and provided him with great enjoyment.
He served in the United States Army, 2nd Division as an artilleryman in the Korean War. After the military, Dave was a high school math teacher and coach in Arkansas, New Mexico and Oregon before going to work for the United States Forest Service in Heppner; where he worked until his retirement in the spring of 1994. He taught at Baker High School where his children attended classes, and at Burnt River High School in Unity on two separate occasions.
He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, family members said. Dave will be missed by one and all. His kind spirit touched everyone he met, they said.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Jo Zachry.
Survivors include his children, Suzanne Howes and her husband, Steven, of Pasco, Washington, Steven Zachry and his wife, Sara, of Stevensville, Montana, Scott Zachry and his wife, Sheila, of Memphis, Tennessee; and grandson, Brenton Zachry of Seattle, Washington.
