Baker 5th in American Legion wooden bat tourney

Baker finished fifth Sunday at the annual Baker Wood Bats baseball tournament at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker defeated Winnemucca No. 2, 9-5 in the fifth-place game.

Saturday, Baker lost 12-5 to Australia before tying Winnemucca No. 1 2-2 in nine innings. That game ended by time limit.

Friday, Baker split games with Winnemucca No. 2 and Milton-Freewater. Baker defeated Winnemucca No. 2, 5-2 but lost 6-3 to Milton-Freewater.

La Grande defeated Milton-Freewater 8-3 for third place.

Winnemucca No. 1 topped Australlia 5-1 for the title.

Baker quarterback transfers to Oregon City


When Baker opens training camp for the 2014 Greater Oregon League football season it will be without senior quarterback Thomas Hamilton.

The 6-foot-3 Hamilton has transferred to Class 6A Oregon City.

A story in The Oregonian and on www.oregonlive.com said Hamilton will move to Oregon City this week and jump into the mix for the Pioneers’ starting quarterback position.

The story said Hamilton began thinking of transferring during the spring, then visited Oregon City in June.

He notified Baker coach Dave Johnson of his decision last Tuesday.

Hamilton completed 146 of 241 passes for 1,470 yards and a dozen touchdowns last season.

 

Bulldogs baseball season over

Baker's high school baseball season is over.

Ridgeview slugged three home runs Friday to hand the Bulldogs a 6-3 defeat in the Class 4A state quarterfinals at the Baker Sports Complex.

Ridgeview scored three single runs in the first, third and sixth innings to ake a 3-0 lead.

Baker answered with a two-run home run by Stephen Schott in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 3-2.

But Ridgeview scored three runs, two on home runs, in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

Baker's final run of the season was a solo homer by Mason Cline in the bottom of the seventh.

Baker finished its season 19-9. 

 

Bulldogs hammer Estacada

Baker used two big innings Wednesday to roll past Estacada 18-7 in the first round of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker scored seven runs in the first inning, and added eight in the third.

Caleb Custer picked up the win on the mound.

Baker will host Ridgeview of Redmond in a quarterfinal game Friday at 4 p.m. Ridgeview defeated Cascade 9-8 Wednesday.

Baker to host Estacada

Baker will host Estacada in the first round of the Class 4A state baseball playoffs Wednesday at the Baker Sports Complex.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Baker (18-8) enters the playoffs as the Greater Oregon League champion.

 

Baker tennis stops Ontario, La Grande

Baker’s boys and girls tennis teams swept matches from Ontario and La Grande Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Friday, at the Ash Grove Complex, the Baker boys topped Ontario 5-0, and the girls 3-2.

Saturday, at La Grande, both Baker teams swept 5-0.

 

Baker softball swept

Baker’s post-season softball hopes took a direct hit Friday when the Bulldogs lost a Greater Oregon League doubleheader to Ontario 11-3 and 20-7 at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker and Ontario are now tied for second place with 3-5 GOL records. They have split their four games this season.

 

Baker baseball clinches post-season berth

Baker clinched a post-season baseball berth Saturday after sweeping Ontario 8-0 and 13-4 in a Greater Oregon League doubleheader at the Baker Sports Complex.

Baker (7-1 in the GOL) can finish no worse than second place in the GOL race with four games remaining in the regular season.

 

Baker girls win Dive & Dash

Baker won the girls team championship, and placed third in the boys standings Sunday at the annual Baker Dive & Dash swim meet at Sam-O Swim Center.

The girls outdistanced six other teams to claim their title.

Six Baker swimmers, and two from La Grande with Baker ties, claimed high-point honors in their age divisions.

 

BAKER BOYS GOLF: Bulldogs place second

Baker just can’t seem to get past Pendleton in boys golf.

For the third consecutive tournament Monday, the Bulldogs finished second to Pendleton in the team standings.

This time the Bulldogs shot a score of 332 to take second at the Baker Invitational at Quail Ridge Golf Course. Pendleton won the team title with a score of 324.
