As one Baker parent put it after the match, “it was ugly, but it was a win.”

That statement described Baker’s come-from-behind Greater Oregon League volleyball win over La Grande in the Baker gym.

The Bulldogs lost the first two sets 25-19, 25-21 before rallying to win the next three 25-16, 25-21, 15-7.

It was the first GOL match of the season for the two teams.

Baker coach Warren Wilson said the turning point in the match came when the Bulldogs decided to play ball.

“They finally accepted the challenge,” he said. “This was a huge win.

“They proved they could be what they could be. Those last three sets were the way the kids played last weekend and last week,” Wilson said.

After losing the first two sets, Baker started sharp in the third.

Jayme Ramos served the Bulldogs on top 3-0 and Abby Baker added three more service points for a 6-1 Baker edge.

Late in the set, Bekka Hughes came off the bench to serve three more points to help build Baker’s lead to 11-3.

The Bulldogs maintained their lead at, or near, eight points the rest of the set before Paige Pearce’s kill scored the game-winner.

In Game 4, Abby Baker and Gussie Cook served the Bulldogs to a 7-2 lead.

Then after La Grande pulled to 13-11, Cook and Hughes combined to serve Baker back on top at 19-12.

La Grande made one final rally, cutting Baker’s lead to 23-21 before Abby Baker served the final two points to even the match at 2-2.

The final game turned into the Kaylee Burk show at the net.

Burk combined a series of kills, hits and tips to dominate the net. She led the way to an 11-7 Baker lead.

Kaeli Flanagan then had a hand in scoring the final three points with a scoring hit and an ace serve.

Baker travels to Imbler Thursday to play both the Panthers and Weston-McEwen.

Baker then hosts its own tournament Friday beginning at 9 a.m.

Baker will play Enterprise at 9 a.m. in pool play, Parma at 11 a.m., and New Plymouth at 1 p.m.

Bracket play begins following the end of pool play at approximately 3 p.m.

Baker split Tuesday’s nonvarsity matches with La Grande. Baker won the JV2 match 25-18, 25-13.

La Grande won the JV match 10-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10.
