Baker’s Courtney Petry won the consolation championship at the Clas
4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis tournament Saturday at the University of
Oregon in Eugene.
Petry, a junior, defeated Philomath’s Hannah Hellberg 8-6 to win the title.
Petry, in her third state appearance, lost 6-4, 6-0 to third-seed Maggie Schein in her opening match Friday.
That dropped Petry into consolation play.
In her first match Petry defeated Maiki Jung of Estacada 8-5. She
followed that with an 8-0 win over Molalla’s Kritina Morris in the
consolation semifinals.
“Courtney played the third-seeded player close,” said Baker coach George Keister.
“Then in consolation play she just played better and better. She kept the presure on her opponents.”
Petry’s effort was good enough for Baker to finish tied with Sisters
and North Bend for 11th in the girls standings with two points.
