Powder Valley and Wallowa advanced to the District 7-1A boys basketball
championship game after claiming semifinal wins Friday at Baker High
School.
Powder Valley, seeded No. 2, defeated Cove 69-59 to advance. Wallowa, the top seed, stopped Imbler 68-56.
Powder Valley takes lead early
Powder Valley used a 10-0 run late in the first quarter to break a 12-12 tie and never trailed after that.
The 10-0 run, five each by Trenton Dixon and Levi Allen, lifted the Badgers to a 22-12 lead. Powder led 22-14 at the break.
Both teams then tallied 17 points in the second period leaving Powder Valley ahead 39-31 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the teams again scored the same number of
points — 10 — to leave the Badgers ahead 49-41 entering the fourth
quarter.
Cove managed to cut the deficit to five points, 56-51, midway
through the final eight minutes. But the Leopards, who took Powder to
overtime twice during the regular season, could get no closer.

Bulldogs clinch second place with 86-46 win
Baker secured second place in the Greater Oregon League boys basketball race Tuesday by burying Ontario 86-46 at BHS.
The win, the third by the Bulldogs over Ontario this season, means
Baker will host a district second-round game Feb. 25. Ontario will host
Mac-Hi Feb. 23 to earn the right to travel to Baker. The winner of the
Feb. 25 game then travels to La Grande Feb. 27 to play the Tigers for
Class 4A state seeding.
Baker did little wrong Tuesday against Ontario.
“Everything was clicking, attacking,” said Baker coach Craig Woods.
“Even at halftime we talked about playing a complete four quarters.”
Derek Blankenship and Taylor McEnroe each scored four points, and
B.J. Quintana and Trace Richardson three each as the Bulldogs took a
20-10 lead after one period.
