Powder Valley boys run past Wallowa for crown

Powder Valley, the regular-season Old Oregon champion, used a 6-point
spurt midway through the third quarter to pull ahead and went on to a
49-39 victory over the Cougars.

Each team had won one game against the other during the Old Oregon
League season. So Saturday’s title matchup was the rubber game for
Joseph and Imbler.
In the end, top-ranked Joseph ran away with a 52-37 win over second-ranked Imbler at Baker High School.

Pine-Eagle and Powder Valley girls eliminated
Wallowa and Cove advanced to the semifinals of the District 7-1A girls basketball tournament Thursday at Baker High School.
Wallowa eliminated Pine-Eagle 54-41, and Cove ended Powder Valley’s season, 35-20.

Walker Kaseberg’s free throw gives Baker the lead, then Derek Blankenship makes two more with 6.8 seconds left
Baker kept its share of first place in the Greater Oregon League boys
basketball race Tuesday at Ontario. But the Bulldogs needed double
overtime to do so.
Baker outscored the Tigers 5-2 in the second extra period to pull out a
62-59 victory. The win improves Baker’s GOL record to 6-1. The Bulldogs
entered the game tied with La Grande for first place. La Grande beat
Mac-Hi 71-41 on Tuesday to also improve to 6-1.

Baker entered Tuesday’s Greater Oregon League girls basketball game at
Ontario needing one win to clinch the league championship.
The Bulldogs were riding a 12-game winning streak, were undefeated in
league play, and had beaten Ontario twice earlier this season.

The Bulldogs finished the 14-team tournament with 171 points, edging Grant Union by 5.5 points.
“Everybody wrestled well. It was a good, successful weekend for us,” said Baker coach Dee Gorrell.
“The young kids stepped up again. It was a nice way to end the regular
season. Now it’s time to gear up for district. The kids are peaking at
the right time.”

The Bulldogs qualified after placing in their events at the Special
District 2 meet last weekend at Molalla. Final official district
results were unavailable. District qualifiers were listed on the
swimming section at www.osaa.org.

Harvest Christian Academy had a big weekend when it traveled to Ontario Friday to play the Champ Falcons.
The Harvest Christian boys won 65-26. Will Godes led the Knights
with 16 points. Braden Phillips added 15, Jeff Hurst 14, Alex Turner
13, Josh Hurst and Josh Rodli each two, and Thomas Svitak one.

Trio of local businesses donate flag
A patriotic addition to the Baker High School gymnasium was unveiled
Friday before the Baker boys and girls basketball games with Mac-Hi.
A new, and very large, American flag was unveiled from the rafters
above center court in the gym. The 12-by-18-foot flag was purchased
from Morgan Flags at a price of $5,000.
The flag, and all installation costs, were donated to BHS by Northwest
Trenching Inc., Baker Vision Clinic and Thatcher’s Ace Hardware.
