Of the Baker City Herald

Wins have been hard to come by for the young Baker girls basketball team this season. But, Saturday, the Bulldogs earned one of the more hard-fought victories of their season.

Rachel Hills rebound basket with 1:20 left in the game completed a 9-0 Baker run that propelled the Bulldogs to a 41-39 win over Mac-Hi in the Greater Oregon League contest at Baker.

The win came on the heels of a 62-34 loss at Ontario on Friday.

Saturday, following Hills basket the teams traded turnovers until Bakers Rosanne Curtis was fouled with 18 seconds left.

Curtis missed the free throw and Mac-Hi rebounded.

Then, with 12 seconds left, Mac-Hi coach Chip Ambler tried to get his team to call a timeout. But, none of the Pioneers heard him and Brooke Garton fired up a three-point shot.

Luckily for Mac-Hi, or unlucky for Baker, the Pioneers rebounded the loose ball deep in the right corner. Then, with 8 seconds left, Ambler got his timeout.

Bakers defense forced Garton to try another off-balance three with a second left. The shot was wide and Baker had the win.

We did everything right down the stretch, said Baker coach Joel Richardson.

We played really nice defense tonight, he said. And, the fans were great tonight. They cheered us on late and got our spirits up. We made a run at the right time.

Trailing 39-32 after Mac-His Lauren Burlingame connected on her fifth three-pointer to start the final quarter, Baker mounted its comeback.

The Bulldogs shut Mac-Hi out the rest of the game, and scored nine straight points.

Curtis got the ball rolling with a three-pointer. Anita Curtis and Kristina Stevens each added two-point baskets before Hills game-winner.

Baker rode a pair of three-point bombs from Laura Gyllenberg to a 10-8 first-quarter lead.

Then, the teams traded baskets in the second quarter with Mac-Hi pulling ahead 26-24 at halftime.

Burlingame scored 14 points in the first half, including four threes.

Burlingame shot the lights out in the first half, Richardson said.

We made things difficult for them in the first half, except for her. Then we did a great job of making the adjustments to take her away from the offense late.

Stevens led Baker with 10 points. Rosanne Curtis and Gyllenberg each added nine.

One sour note tempered the win. Stevens was knocked to the floor on a drive late in the game, falling hard on her right wrist.

She had it x-rayed after the game, disclosing a fracture that will have the wrist in a cast for 10 weeks.

Ontario thumps Bulldogs

Baker fell behind 21-7 after one period and could never catch up against Ontario.

We came out of the gate slow, Richardson said.

Ontario scored the first 11 points of the game.

Baker trailed 38-13 at halftime.

It was just too big of a hole, Richardson said. Cold shooting from the perimeter was the main problem.

Hill led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

Rachel played a great game for, Richardson said. She went to the boards hard.

The Baker coach was pleased with the Bulldogs effort, except for the shooting.

Im proud of these kids. Theyre playing hard every night, he said.

Baker travels to Vale Saturday.
