Baker's roster looked more like a MASH unit than a girls basketball

team Friday following a 41-33 Greater Oregon League loss at La Grande.

Mackenzie Warner was nursing a sprained wrist, Whitney Phillips a cut mouth and Mackenzie Srack a sprained ankle.

"The game was extremely physical and we didn't handle that pressure up front very well," said Baker coach Tim Smith.

"We turned the ball over too many times in the first half. We gave up too many opportunities."

Smith said the Bulldogs finished with more than 30 turnovers in the game.

"We were playing catchup all the time, and we're not a catchup type

of team. We have to continue to convince ourselves that we can handle

the basketball," Smith said.

The Bulldogs suffered a major blow when Warner went down in the

second quarter. The Baker senior got tangled up with a La Grande player

and fell on her wrist.

Warner was taken to Grande Ronde Hospital for x-rays. Preliminary reports were that she had broken her wrist.

"That's what we thought at first, but her father, Fred, told me when they got back that it was just a sprained wrist," Smith said.

"She could be back in a week or so depending on he tolerance for the pain.

"Losing Mackenzie hurt us both emotionally and physically. She's one of our better ball handlers," Smith said.

Even with Warner out the Bulldogs managed to stay within 22-20 at halftime. Aly Ogan scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half to keep Baker close.

Baker, which never led in the game, managed to tie the contest three times in the third quarter before trailing 28-26 at the break.

The Bulldogs remained in range most of the fourth quarter, drawing within 30-29 on an Ogan free throw with 4:10 left in the game. But La Grande hit 9-of-15 free throws in the final quarter, and Baker just 3-of-11.

Phillips, who finished with 12 points, received a laceration in her mouth in the fourth quarter when she was elbowed in the face. Srack also sprained her ankle late in the game.

"Aly and Whitney put the team on their backs," said Smith. "The girls never gave up. We missed a few free throws at the end that didn't help.

"We're going to continue to work. We just have to value the ball more," Smith said.

Baker (1-1 in the GOL) travels to Milton-Freewater Saturday to play the Pioneers (1-1).
